Haley died a lonely man, friends say
HARLINGEN, Texas — Bill Haley died a lonely man, searching for a glimmer of his past glory as a pioneer in rock ‘n’ roll music, friends who frequently visited the secluded entertainer say.
Haley, 55, first known for his recording, ‘Rock Around the Clock,’ was found dead Monday in a small room attached to the garage of his rambling two-store home. A justice of the peace ruled death from natural causes.

Barbara Billnitzer, a waitress at Sambo’s Restaurant, said she saw Haley two or three times a week.
‘He always seemed real lonely,’ she said. ‘Sometimes he would walk in and tell us he was Bill Haley and show us his driver’s license. Sometimes he would walk up to different customers and introduce himself.
‘When he’d tell you who he was, he’d act like it was a secret. He didn’t want anyone to know. He never talked about his career, but it was like he was dropping clues.
‘Sometimes he’d sit at the counter and start singing. Then he’d talk to people like he wanted them to figure out who he was without having to tell them.
‘It all seems so sad,’ she said.

Carl Strong, a regular customer at the restaurant, said he had known Haley for about 2 years.
‘He was quiet like,’ Strong said. ‘Sometimes he would sit at the counter and look at nothing. Sometimes he’d order a meal and not even eat it.
‘But when Haley did feel like talking, he would say, ‘I’m the guy who wrote ‘Rock Around the Clock,’ then he’d show me his driver’s license.
‘He liked to talk about people he had known, the people in his band,’ Strong said, ‘but sometimes he kind of rambled.’
Harlingen Police Capt. Buddy Lowrimore, who met Haley at a restaurant and frequently talked with him by telephone, described the entertainer as ‘quiet and reserved.’
‘I talked to him on occasion,’ Lowrimore said. ‘I don’t think he had many friends in Harlingen.’
But scores of people went Wednesday to Kreidler-Ashcraft Funeral Home to view the body of the man who some music historians say invented rock ‘n’ roll.
