BUSINESS SHOULD PREPARE FOR CATASTROPHIC ILLNESS
BUSINESS MUST PREPARE FOR THE AVIAN FLU
CAREY (2005) BUSINESS WEEK, 11/28/36-40.
The Avian flu has finally become an important part of the business community. At least, they are aware of the problem and are beginning to make preparations. BUSINESS WEEK suggests the following:
LEAVE HOT ZONES: IF THE FLU HITS A COUNTRY OF WHICH ONE HAS EMPLOYEES. Have them quarantined, tested, and then sent home to the USA.
FOCUS ON ESSENTIALS: What can your work force do with 40% gone because of illness? What are the most strategic tasks that need to be done?
STOCK UP: For awhile, disregard just in time production. Stock up on necessary products that will help the business continue even in bad times.
GO IT ALONE: Prepare for stoppages in power, water, and other utilities.
ISOLATE THE SICK: Have health coverage so the sick stay home. You save money in the long run.
SPREAD OUT: Make as many jobs as possible originate from the employee’s home.
BEEF UP SECURITY: During a crisis, crime increases.
KEEP TALKING: The more preparation that there is the more likely that the workers will not panic and will be able continue on after the pandemic. 98% will probably survive.
