I thought that it was Gray that was deep throat however it was Mark Felt.

He believed that there was nowhere to go to reveal himself. Thus he contacted Woodward. He was bitter that Gray got his job after Hoover died. However, he also wanted to save the FBI. He was more of a guide than a source. Much of the hardwork was in the hands of the two young metro reporters.
