GUYLAND is the new research on 20 and 30 somethings that have extended their teen years. In 1960, 70% of males were married by 30 today it is a 30%. Men are delaying or not involved in marriage. One can look at date sites and the female includes that she does not want children. That increases her chances of getting a male. Then she can change her mind later when married.
For many males, going home at night is a second shift to take care of children or have the wife asks that he do that plus household chores and read to the kids. Each child cost $300, 000 to rise until 18 years old and does not include college. Further, the market place continues to generate job creation which is not a net figure. For every $10.00 hr job that is lost overseas, it is likely to be replaced with a minimum wage job. America is now a blue collar service country. There are some good ones coming in, but they require a doctorate.
Thus males are reluctant to enter marriage. In agricultural countries, children meant that extra money was generated by as many children as possible. In urban societies, the reverse appears valid.
Kimmel does not like what he sees. Indeed good and productive countries have strong families. His sample was all white. However if GUYLAND is applied to the Black community, fatherless communities is a disaster. GUYLAND does have in it, lots of young males, plus sperm dads, and divorcees. The life may appear empty, but one is likely to get more rest, travel more and do more adult activities. Females want time to grow, but they want a sperm guy that sticks around and raises the children. They are called fathers.
When women join GUYLAND it can be with trepidation. Guys want to drink and get a sex fix. Women are looking for husbands. For the male, many of the tasks of the family have been comidified by private corporations. Sleeping in is replaced with all nights with a child who has a milk allergy. Men marry into responsibility. Women marry into responsibility with help from the guy. She also wants a friend in him and to help her with the second shift regardless if she is at home or coming home from work. If he does not fulfill his side of her perception, she resents and that hurts the sex life as well as the friendship. It is building toward serial monogamy. The kids have a number of Dads.
Along with the entire above, children can grow up to hate you. Males may see their kids one night for pizza. Mom and the kids can move away and Dad becomes an empty suit.
GUYLAND is the escape valve. Scott Baio finally got married in his mid 40’s and his life changed dramatically as his wife was already pregnant. Pregnancy means that the parent is rarely independent to move around without one eye attached to the child until the last child is around 7.
Further, some husbands rejoin GUYLAND on the side. He is at the bar without his wife.
He attends meetings in another city without the spouse. In other words, he wants to get a way from the responsibility.
And yet stats indicate that he is likely to be happier married and have more sex when he is married. Now to complicate things, mom and dad may grow apart but remain under the same roof until the death. So how does Mom feel about it? Other research in other areas indicates that the mother falls in love with the child over Dad. By the second child, dad is part of the chorus.
What all this suggests is that SERIAL MARRIAGE is most likely to be the family of the future. Some preventives may be to encourage both sexes to marry later in life, and to make divorce lengthier.
