After 44 Years, MTV Is Officially Dead

Published Dec 30, 2025
Chris is a Senior News Writer for Collider. He can be found in an IMAX screen, with his eyes watering and his ears bleeding for his own pleasure. He joined the news team in 2022 and accidentally fell upwards into a senior position despite his best efforts.
For reasons unknown, he enjoys analyzing box office receipts, giant sharks, and has become known as the go-to man for all things Bosch, Mission: Impossible and Christopher Nolan in Collider’s news division. Recently, he found himself yeehawing along to the Dutton saga on the Yellowstone Ranch.
He is proficient in sarcasm, wit, Photoshop and working unfeasibly long hours. Amongst his passions sit the likes of the history of the Walt Disney Company, the construction of theme parks, steam trains and binge-watching Gilmore Girls with a coffee that is just hot enough to scald him.
His obsession with the Apple TV+ series Silo is the subject of mockery within the Senior News channel, where his feelings about Taylor Sheridan‘s work are enough to make his fellow writers roll their eyes.
If you’re of a certain age and you feel like your youth is dying in front of you — you’re probably right. Forty four years after it first launched, MTV as we know it is dead. By the end of this year, MTV’s remaining 24-hour music channels will shut down globally, closing the book on one of the most influential chapters in pop culture history. While the MTV brand isn’t disappearing entirely, the version of MTV that actually played music — wall-to-wall, day and night — is effectively over.
This move affects MTV’s dedicated music-only channels, not the main MTV network, which will continue airing reality shows and pop culture programming. In the U.K. and across parts of Europe, channels like MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live are being removed from Sky and Virgin Media lineups. In the U.S., remaining regional cable feeds that still carried music-only MTV programming are also slated to go dark as distribution contracts expire.
For decades, MTV was the closest thing music fans had to a shared global living room. You didn’t just watch music videos — you waited for them. A new video premiere could be an event. Getting rotation on MTV could make or break a band. Entire careers were built on those few minutes between commercials.

In the ’80s and ’90s, MTV’s VJs were stars in their own right. Mark Goodman, Nina Blackwood, J.J. Jackson, Alan Hunter, and Martha Quinn didn’t just introduce videos — they talked to you. Later came Kurt Loder delivering music news with calm authority, Tabitha Soren reporting from the cultural frontlines, and Carson Daly presiding over the chaos of Total Request Live, where fans turned music fandom into a full-contact sport.
The network also gave us iconic shows like Jackass, which remains just as culturally relevant and hilarious today; Cribs, which took us behind closed doors with celebrities in their own homes; and of course, The Osbournes, which defined reality television for a generation and remains the gold standard of “living with famous people”. Former MTV VJ Neil Cole summed up what’s being lost better than any corporate statement ever could.
“The 38 months I worked full-time as an MTV presenter was the best possible way to learn and develop live broadcast skills which I still utilize over twenty years later. And throughout – the main focus was always MUSIC.”
As ABBA would say — MTV, thank you for the music.
