The Kennedy assassination was significant in that through his persona he could keep white ethnics and African-Americans in the same political tent. After his death, white ethnics went to George Wallace. Kennedy would probably not win the nomination as Hubert Humphrey had the nomination sewed up without going through the primaries.
However, one inadvertently learns years later that Kennedy would run as vice president.
RFK was killed at least by one person, perhaps more. The individual was Sirhan B. Sirhan, a Palestinian immigrant. He was very upset that Kennedy was a strong supporter of Israel. Writings found in his home strongly suggest that Sirhan was the primary killer. There were also numerous witnesses along with video tape that Sirhan shot RFK in the head with a .22 pistol. Five others were shot and two extra bullets were discovered in the door post just off the kitchen. The total count was 10 bullets from an 8 bullet gun.
At the time, no candidates for president were covered by the secret service. Thus Kennedy was an excellent target. He said to supporters in the Ambassador hotel, “it is on to Chicago, and let’s win there.” He turned to head toward a newsroom in the back of the stage. He had to pass through the kitchen where Sirhan was waiting. There he was shot.
Five others were also hurt by Sirhan’s bullets. However, after the assassination, the area was reviewed by the FBI. The individual assigned counted 10 bullets. Sirhan was near a lady with a polka dot dress. At young Hispanic lady saw a couple rush from the scène saying “we got him.” There names were thought to be Bernstein.
The LAPD was concerned that this would be another Dallas. The Dallas police so botched the evidence and the security of the alleged assassin in the JFK killing that they became the laughing stock among the police subculture.
If ten bullets were discovered, only 8 could have come from Sirhan. The other two may have come from the Bernsteins. The lab work and the investigation were rushed. The young Hispanic lady revised her story and another polka dot dressed lady was discovered who was partially disabled. The case appeared to be closed. The door post was removed and destroyed as well as 200 pictures of the crime and the crime scene.
However, questions were raised about the door post, the distance between Saran and RFK relative to the bullets impact… How were the bullets fired from Sirhan if he was not faced to face with RFK? Most witnesses observed Sirhan and the other couple. What happened to the Bernsteins? One investigator was told to shut up about the case. Twenty years later an audio tape surfaced that recorded LAPD investigator brow beating the young Hispanic witness of the Bernstein couple to change her story. In 1987, the Kennedy files were released but so much was missing and much was blacked out. It would be hard to make an outside investigation.
Sirhan’s story of the account has changed over the years with his last remarks indicating that he was the “fall guy.” By 1999, sources indicate that Sirhan believes that another was also an assassin.
