The Shawshank Redemption is one of Hollywood’s most beloved and celebrated films. Despite its initial struggle at the box office, its message of hope, resilience, and the power of friendship has resonated with audiences worldwide. While the movie has cemented its place in cinematic history, a lot of drama and chaos occurred off-screen.

From actors spending time in prison to dangerous props, these behind-the-scenes secrets from The Shawshank Redemption will change the way you see the iconic film. Here’s what really happened when the cameras weren’t rolling!
Based on a Stephen King Short Story
The Shawshank Redemption is rooted in the talented Stephen King’s novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, which first appeared in his 1982 short story collection, Different Seasons.

Interestingly, King first met with director Frank Darabont when the author made a deal with novice directors, offering the rights to his short stories to amateur directors in a unique $1 deal, as long as they didn’t use them for commercial purposes. Darabont’s adaptation of another short story, The Woman in the Room, impressed King so much that he agreed to let Darabont adapt the novella—and that’s how this cinematic gem was born.
Morgan Freeman Played Catch—For Nine Hours
We never doubted Morgan Freeman’s dedication to his roles, but one scene in The Shawshank Redemption proved that. When Freeman’s character Red is approached by Andy about a rock hammer, Red answers him while casually playing catch. Though it was a seemingly simple moment, it took nine hours to film!

Without a single complaint, Freeman threw that baseball over and over throughout the shooting, embodying Red’s calm demeanor. The next day, however, Freeman arrived on set with his arm in a sling.
They Found the Perfect Location in Ohio
After searching for the perfect location to shoot the film, set directors found the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio, a far cry from where the story had originally been imagined—all the way in Maine. Nevertheless, the prison provided the perfect backdrop.

It had housed inmates since 1896, and after the inmates had won a class action suit, the prison was slated for demolition. However, the production delayed its fate for a year, maintaining its eerie, timeworn walls and capturing the bleakness of prison life.
Narration Was Inspired By *Goodfellas*
With so much dialogue in the original novella, director Frank Darabont was forced to decide how to capture the entire story. When his original idea to use voiceover began to feel like overkill, he turned on Goodfellas and found some inspiration.

Darabont was captivated by how the film used voiceover to enhance Henry Hill’s journey through the mafia underworld, with Ray Liotta’s narration adding depth and texture to the story. This technique resonated with Darabont, reinforcing his belief that Shawshank should be narrated by Red, who guides us through Andy Dufresne’s harrowing journey.
Iconic Scene Wasn’t in Focus
There’s no scene in the movie quite as iconic and impactful as the one where Andy finally escapes Shawshank through the pipe and raises his arms outstretched towards the rain-filled sky. But it’s a miracle this scene made it to the final cut.

Whether it was the rain or the shoddy work of the cameramen, this shot was out of focus every time it was filmed. With the clock ticking and tensions high, the final take finally turned out to be the perfect shot, immortalizing Andy’s triumph in a single, unforgettable frame.
