SUNNY NOSTALGIA
SUNNY NOSTALGIA
The Beach Boys beat the system. However, they lost a lot of themselves fighting the executives at the various “record companies” The system means that a garage band signs a contract in which the recording companies get most of everything. The devolution goes like this. The band gets a big hit and most then disappear. However ,a blue collar group from Hawthorne could keep up. Until it was time to get rid of them.
Popular bands after the first hit can grow into a big selling album. The corporation then take the group to get more hits. Finally, they flop on one album and that should be the end of them. However, they keep going by touring more and more. They play their hits followed by a tour with smoking machines and special lighting surrounding them to make them appear bigger. They may cover more of other bands hits. However, they keep going and they lose their money and themselves. The corporations now know how to dump them because it’s in the contract.
For the group, the continous travel places them just a few minutes from death because the transportation can fail. Further, members tire of each other and soon it becomes boring to travel. The best part of the work is to get to go back home to a family that have lost interest in them.
There is a struggle between the commercial and the creative. Further, new generations come to their shows. However, they begin to hate the group because the songs and presentations are dated. There are new bands who will follow the systems way. A handful of musicians some how get de-stigmatize. Thus, there back at it.
The burn out nearly kills the members. They play new songs and may get a second start. More managers of stadiums and other outlets wants them. They then get popular for being popular. The record corporation now wants more albums. Further, the release of big hits does not allow for smaller hits to follow. Why? The “B” sides don’t help the corporations in terms of profitablility. A new album must have new music. Further, changes just a bit so that this next new one has more hits but also more “B” sides. They are almost famous again, but the local critic wants to smear them because they are writing to other critics. The fans begin to bond together and so some critics mellow a bit.
And now America, here are the Beach Boys. Fom 62’ to 65’ was their most golden period. The “B” sides fall to the side. If they are found later on another album, the critics are joyful over their new finding. They are critical and hateful people. They must spend some time in purgatory because they can not consider being wrong. The following are “B” cuts that you have never heard and not found on compilations or greatest hits. They are lost to time. However, there is a reincarnation or resurrection because you can hear them hear and record them. Right here. .Right now..
