THANK YOU FOR BEING LATE
AN E-MAIL TO THOMAS FRIEDMAN ON THANK YOU FOR BEING LATE
Dear Mr. Friedman,
Enjoyed your presentation of your new book at Cornell College in Iowa. After reading the book, I have one addendum. You present a 21st Century version of “Culture Lag.” It originates with Ogburn in his “Social Change” book of 1920. That means in primitive terms, material culture overwhelms non-material culture. Though other books have used this theory. It also surfaces in Toffler’s “Future Shock” in 1970. Thus technology grows geometrically and human adaption arithmetically. Ogburn’s” Culture Lag” has probably been preceded by many others in the past.
Other related terms are:
accelerated change / logarithmic timeline/ progress trap/irrational allocation/societal collapse/ system justification/prosbia.
Enjoyed book and recommend it. Tangentially, worked at Weigelwood Resort in the 50’s within ten miles of Itasca State Park and Lake. Small world. You mentioned Itasca as a group with same name in your home town, St. Louis Park. Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Unfortunately, you may be in a losing battle, but you gave the tools for trust and returning away from isolation.
