what is a categorical variable simple definition
- Categorical Variables12A categorical variable is a type of variable that can take on one of a limited, and usually fixed, number of possible values, assigning each individual or other unit of observation to a particular group or nominal category based on some qualitative property. These variables are also known as qualitative variables and are used to represent data that can be divided into distinct groups or categories.Types of Categorical VariablesCategorical variables can be classified into three main types:
- Nominal Variables: These variables define data qualities, features, and functionality without any order or ranking. Examples include gender, religion, and race.
- Ordinal Variables: These variables are ordered and positioned according to their value. They categorize data and align them accordingly. Examples include survey responses, income brackets, and education levels.
- Binary Variables: Also known as dichotomous variables, these represent categorical variables in the form of binary values (0 and 1). Examples include yes/no questions and presence/absence of a characteristic.
- Demographic Information: Gender, disease status.
- Blood Type: A, B, AB, or O.
- Political Party: Green Party, Christian Democrat, Social Democrat, etc.
- Type of Rock: Igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic.
- Dummy Coding: Used when there is a control or comparison group in mind. The reference group is assigned a value of 0, and the group of interest is assigned a value of 1.
- Effects Coding: Compares one group to all other groups combined. The group of interest is coded with 1, and the group of least interest is coded with -1.
- Contrast Coding: Allows researchers to ask specific questions by designing unique comparisons based on previous theory or research.
