how does the usa upper mobility compare to other democracies in the world
- LikeDislikeU.S. Upper Mobility Compared to Other DemocraciesThe United States generally ranks below many Western democracies in measures of upward mobility, though the exact ranking depends on the metric used.Cross-country rankings
According to the World Economic Forum’s Social Mobility Index (2026), the U.S. scores 70.4 out of 100, placing it behind most high-income democracies such as Denmark (85.2), Norway (83.6), Finland (83.6), Sweden (83.5), Iceland (82.7), and the Netherlands (82.4) World Population Review. Countries like Canada, Australia, and Japan also rank higher than the U.S. Forbes.Intergenerational income elasticity (IGE)
IGE measures how much a child’s income is influenced by their parents’ income. OECD data show that a child in the bottom tenth of the income distribution in Denmark would take about two generations to reach the median, while in the U.S. it would take five generations Forbes. This suggests the U.S. has significantly slower upward mobility.Absolute vs. relative mobility- Absolute mobility: Fewer U.S. children now earn more in real terms than their parents compared to other countries. For example, only about 50% of 30-year-olds in the U.S. earn more than their parents at the same age, compared to roughly 55% in Canada and Finland isr.umich.edu.
- Relative mobility: When comparing income ranks rather than absolute amounts, U.S. men’s upward mobility from the bottom is about as high as in other countries, but downward mobility from the top is not clearly lower Archbridge Institute.
Research points to several factors:- Declining economic growth and unequal distribution of gains since the late 1970s Forbes.
- High housing costs and restrictive zoning limiting access to better schools and job markets Forbes.
- Regressive tax systems that disproportionately affect low- and middle-income families Forbes.
- Persistent income inequality, which is highest on record Forbes.
While the U.S. still offers opportunities for upward mobility, many democracies—especially Nordic and some Anglophone countries—outperform it in helping children move up the income ladder. The gap is most pronounced in absolute mobility, where the U.S. ranks near the bottom among high-income nations World Population Review+2.Read lessWorld Population ReviewSocial Mobility by Country 2026 – World Population Reviewhttps://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/social-mobility-by-countryForbesWhy Economic Mobility is Key to the American Dream – Forbeshttps://www.forbes.com/sites/iansimmons/2025/12/18/why-economic-mobility-is-key-to-the-american-dream/isr.umich.eduNew paper explores declining income mobility around the worldhttps://isr.umich.edu/news-events/news-releases/new-paper-explores-declining-income-mobility-around-the-world/Show All
