Roughly 50% of new teachers quit in the first five years. The really good ones generally find coping mechanism as do the really difficult ones. In other words, its warfare and a bifurcation occur among the teacher warriors who serve in the trenches.
So what is going on?
Times have changed as they usually do. Now the teacher is the enemy and parents are there to shield and protect their child. If the child cheats, it’s the teacher’s fault. Teachers must know hundreds of laws that if they conduct themselves inappropriately, they can get fired and sued. So, many quit.
There are numerous pressures to make every one above average which is statistically impossible, but very likely in K-12. So, it goes.
The best strategy for survival is to get the students ready for the annual tests so that no child is left behind. Stick to procedure, and be interesting. If parents push, let em’ pass.
Jocks get the best treatment in high school. This really applies to a winning football player. Rich kids get a pass too.
The most important thing is to have liability insurance. Law suits can cost you your life time savings and future income.
Teach to the method. Keep the kids and parents happy. Choose your words carefully. Get insurance.
